ESO SUMMER CONCERT 2008
SUNDAY 15 JUNE
ST SAVIOUR'S CHURCH, SOUTH STREET, EASTBOURNE

conductor Graham Jones
leader Lisa Wigmore
soloist Michal Cwizewicz,
violin, winner of the 2008 ESO Young Soloist Competition

Beethoven, Overture to Fidelio
Sibelius,
Violin Concerto
Britten, Matinées Musicales (in memory of Jenny Shepherd)
Bizet, Symphony in C

supported by

Mayor of Eastbourne, Mayoress,
Michal Cwizewicz, Graham Jones

Concert Manager's review note: The programme opened with a powerful yet finely balanced performance of the overture from Beethoven’s only opera, Fidelio, and this was followed by the jewel in the crown of this evening’s music, Sibelius’s Violin Concerto. The soloist was Michal Cwizewicz, the winner of the ESO’s 2008 annual Young Soloist Competition. A graduate with a masters degree in aeronautical engineering from Imperial College (where he researched the aerodynamics of insect flight), Michal is currently studying with Itzhak Rashkovsky as Ash Music Scholar at the Royal College of Music. His performance of this emotionally charged piece was, throughout, tender, controlled, inspired and heartfelt. The Orchestra players, under Graham Jones’s baton and Lisa Wigmore’s leadership, recognised the presence of a violinist who will make a big mark in the music world. They rose to the challenge of this complex and demanding piece by making some of the finest sounds ever in their nearly thirty years of existence and the audience applauded long and loud. The second half comprised Britten’s Matinées Musicales - in memory of Jenny Shepherd who was a principal player with the ESO for some ten years and who died recently. She was a true professional, always smiling and with a warm, kind and encouraging nature and the orchestra again rose to the occasion with a spirited performance of a work not often heard and which drew the best from the orchestra’s woodwind section. This special evening ended with Bizet’s Symphony in C, a work in classical form but with a Gallic flavour. As a precursor of Bizet’s later style, this work features much interesting melodic material; the slow movement in particular featuring some beautifully expressive solo lines in the oboe part. The Orchestra played the whole of this work in a scintillating and effervescent fashion throughout.
